What is the role of the Sheriff?

The Sheriff is a preserver of the peace, protector of the citizen, and guardian of the Constitution. In exercise thereof the Sheriff represents the sovereignty of the State within his county and answers only to the citizens therein.  Through state statute he investigates criminal activity, makes arrests for criminal violations, maintains the county jail, and executes lawful orders of the court. He works collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies regarding above. The Sheriff may also summon the aid of county citizens in the execution of his duties.
